Assignment 1: Public Personnel Today Abstract Defining the needs of public personnel today, analyzing and explaining critical trends affecting the growth of public personnel today, analyzing and evaluating strategies needed to create a diversified workforce as well as strategies the government must address to sustain union membership and representation among public employees will be outlined in the following pages. Public personnel are the employees of federal, state, local, and nonprofit organizations. Public Personnel Management involves two separate avenues. The two are public personnel and personnel administration. They both include public employees, managers, administrators, taxpayers, politicians and citizens. Public agencies that do place value in diversity realize that it is long-term and becomes a valuable asset to the agency (Sorum, 2007, p. 1). Four (4) strategies the government must address to sustain union membership and representation among public employees Union membership and representation is often needed when employees are dissatisfied with the conditions of the workplace or negotiation of compensation to bring change through collective bargaining. However dealing with administrators is not always effective; so the need for union representation come into place.
